Hear from Dr. Hilary Bright, a Pediatric Doctor Resident on her career journey.
The department of Pediatrics has compiled stories from diverse professionals across the organization spanning from community health work, athletic trainers, residents, and practicing Physicians in their visual storytelling series. If you are interested in medicine and looking to learn more about the path to a certain specialty, you can start by heading to the Pediatrics Resource page that contains all things from career discovery, academic preparation and college readiness programs, and even financial aid and scholarship support.
This month’s spotlight is on Dr. Hilary Bright, a Pediatric Resident at Seattle Children’s from Washington D.C. with a passion for medicine and a specialization in genetics. She shared that experiential learning opportunities like shadowing doctors helped her identify that she wanted to pursue the path of a pediatrician. She also shared about how medical school can be embarked on at any point in your career journey, and she even took a few years to discover her interests between her undergraduate studies and graduate school. Many students might believe the misconception that you must know you are interested in medicine as early as high school, but as long as you attain the prerequisites required for medical school, you can major in something as far from medicine like music as Dr. Bright shared.
On advice for getting into medicine, Dr. Bright shared — “It’s about being dedicated. Once you decide this is something that you want to do, really put all of your effort into it and you will get the best out of it that way.” She also discussed the importance of seeing those that look like you in the field you hope to work in one day. “Sometimes it can feel hard when you feel like there is not a lot of you being represented in the field and I want to let you know that we are out there and we are present,” shared Dr. Bright.
