2023 Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Survey Report

2023 EDI Survey Report Summary
In January 2023, UW Medicine conducted its first Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Survey to establish baseline measurements and prioritize areas for improvement. The survey examined how personal characteristics impact employee experiences across UW Medicine.
With 10,246 responses (39% response rate) from staff, faculty, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral fellows, findings revealed mixed results. While many employees feel valued by direct teams and supervisors, significant inequities exist among demographic groups, especially for those with intersectional identities.
Key Recommendations:
- Build trust through leadership accountability and proper handling of bias incidents
- Address disparities in belonging and psychological safety
- Implement systemwide efforts to reduce bias and discrimination
- Increase leadership diversity through formal recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion opportunities
UW Medicine leaders must take primary responsibility for implementing these recommendations, with active engagement from the entire community. We invite all workforce members, patients, families, and community members to join us in this important work.
