WIHSE Program Roadmap

Our method to achieve our intended goal is through our “arch of support,” mentoring and serving students across our programs until they reach their final career goal of professional school admittance for allied health career job entry. Our enrichment pathway programs within WIHSE serving our students longitudinally over their educational career include:  

Doctor For a Day
Grades K-12 
Doctor for A Day (DFAD) is a monthly academy that exposes K-12 youth to health careers through hands-on activities. DFAD partners with clinical departments, school districts and non-profits to hold workshops led by medical students as near peer mentors bringing underrepresented healthcare professionals to K-12 youth to serve as mentors and role models. Doctor For a Day has serves over 500 students per academic year. 

UDOC
Grades 10-11 
UDOC is a 6-week hybrid (3 weeks virtual, 3 weeks in-person) summer residential program held on the University of Washington campus. The program exposes students to a variety of health professions and serves approximately 30 students each summer. 

BRIGHT-UP Summer Science Program 
Grades 9-12  
Biomedical Research Internship for the Growth of High-school Trainees from Underrepresented Populations (BRIGHT-UP) is an immersive research experience for high school students from  groups underrepresented in science, serving approximately 20 students for 8 weeks from June to August. 

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) 
Rising College Sophomores thru Seniors 
Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a 2-week virtual and 4-week in-person boarding summer program for undergraduate students from June to July. SHPEP exposes students to medicine, dentistry, and public health and serves 80 students each summer.  

SHPEP Longitudinal Enhancement (SHPEPLE) 
College AFTER completing SHPEP summer program 
Summer Health Professions Education Program – Longitudinal Enhancement (SHPEPLE) 
is a 24-month program focusing on academic enrichment, professional development and career development to directly support students through the process of preparing their application to medical school. The program serves 25 students per cohort. 

HCOP Ambassadors 
Health professional students  
The HCOP Ambassadors program supports disadvantaged students, typically college seniors and health professional students in their early 20s, by providing mentoring, stipends, scholarships, and clinical training in underserved areas. Building on existing partnerships, the program offers targeted outreach and integrates public health topics like health disparities and behavioral health into its curriculum. Students gain hands-on experience in rural and urban underserved clinics while preparing for healthcare careers.
