Whether guiding students through fellowship applications or advocating for national programs that uplift underrepresented groups in hematology, Dr. Abkowitz has been a tireless advocate for diversity and creating opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to succeed in the medical field.
As Section Head of Hematology at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the Clement A. Finch, MD Endowed Professor at the University of Washington, Dr. Abkowitz has dedicated her career to advancing patient care and training future physicians. Specializing in blood disorders that affect bone marrow and blood cell production, she takes a compassionate, personalized approach to her work. “I enjoy getting to know my patients and their families, solving difficult diagnostic problems, and designing personalized treatment strategies,” she explains.
Dr. Abkowitz’s influence extends far beyond her clinical practice. A past President of the American Society of Hematology, she expanded programs that support scholars from diverse backgrounds, creating opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows to thrive in academic medicine. Her commitment to equity was also reflected in her founding of the Hematology Ad Hoc Committee at the University of Washington, providing a space for faculty of color to connect and support one another.
Dr. Abkowitz’s legacy is deeply rooted in her efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive medical community. By mentoring minority trainees, advocating for systemic change, and creating supportive spaces for underrepresented faculty, she has worked to dismantle barriers and ensure that the medical field reflects the diversity of the populations it serves. As we celebrate her receiving the CMFA Minority Faculty Mentoring Award, we honor her transformative contributions to equity and her dedication to ensuring that all voices in medicine are heard. Congratulations, Dr. Abkowitz!
